Introducing Jess, our new Head of Communications and Marketing
We recently welcomed Jess to our team in a new role as Head of Communications and Marketing. We caught up with Jess to find out more about her and her motivation for joining the team.
What’s your role at Apps for Good?
My role is to communicate with those we need to engage with to give young people the skills and confidence they need to thrive. That means I’m responsible for engaging educators, partners, volunteers and funders through multiple channels, including social media, website, newsletters, events, PR and storytelling, not forgetting our brand! There’s plenty to share about the impact of this brilliant organisation and I’ll be working closely with the team to make it all happen.
What were you doing before you joined us?
When I saw this role advertised, I had to apply. Most recently, I led on communications at Social Tech Trust - a non-profit organisation that invests in and supports purpose-driven tech ventures to scale their social impact. Before that, I worked at Nominet Trust, a corporate foundation that grant funded tech for good initiatives, including Apps for Good!
I also spent a decade of my early career working in marketing for an education tech company, developing strategic partnerships with ICT teachers, school leaders and Education Authorities in England and Scotland.
What motivates you about Apps for Good’s mission?
You can see that I was already sold on the potential of technology to change lives for the better! There are so many complex social challenges we need to solve in this world and so many that have been intensified by the pandemic. I believe that systemic change is possible if we support a new generation of changemakers and give young people from diverse backgrounds the confidence and skills to shape their own future. I also know that collaboration is key to social change and I’m excited by the potential of new partnerships with a shared vision.
Technology can be good and it can be bad. But if we can equip young people with the skills, motivation and knowledge to manage its impact, we can change the world for the better.
What are you looking forward to in your new role?
I love storytelling and already we’ve been able to produce a short film about how teachers and learners feel about our new Innovate for Climate Change course. I’m looking forward to sharing this along with more of the voices of young people to support the launch of this fantastic new chapter in 2022.
