New Content: Home Study Courses
The Apps for Good team are doing everything we can to support our communities during the Covid-19 pandemic and beyond.
Whilst our normal delivery model sees our content delivered by teachers with students working in teams, we've created something that will allow students to work independently or with their families at home.
We recognise that it is challenging to provide young people with interesting, relevant tasks that can be completed independently and are pleased to launch home study versions of three of our most popular courses:
- Machine Learning
- App Design - Paper based
- App Development using App Lab
Machine Learning Short Course - Home Study Version
Machine learning is a system where - rather than a computer programmer deciding the best way to sort, organise, classify or use information – a computer program develops its own set of instructions based on information that users feed it.
This course explores the practical and ethical implications of machine learning and gives students the opportunity to design a prototype of a machine learning model.
This course will:
- Introduce students to the topic of Machine Learning
- Provide interesting, fun and interactive activities and videos to explain this concept and real world application
- Provide students with the opportunity to design and build their own Machine Learning Model
The tasks have been designed to allow students to independently work through by themselves at home and all activities can be completed online in the workbook to avoid the need to print any resources. This course should provide approximately 5 hours of activities and is recommended for secondary and further education students.
Design An App Paper Based - Home Study Version
This course will:
- Introduce students to the topic of App Development
- Encourage students to identify everyday problems which could be solved by a mobile app
- Provide students with the opportunity to create a paper prototype of their mobile app
The tasks have been designed to allow students to independently work through by themselves at home and all activities are paper based, so can be printed and shared with students who perhaps won't have access to a computer at home. This course should provide approximately 5 hours of activities and is recommended for all age ranges.
App Development using App Lab
In this course not only will your students be able to design their app like in the ‘Design an App’ course but they can also create a clickable prototype using App Lab. This course requires a login for App Lab, a free online tool. Students 13 and over can create their own account. Those under 13 will need to have an account set up for them by a teacher or parent/carer. Details of how to do this are in the 'Guide to setting up App Lab accounts' document in the resources section.
