Valuable Trash

Creative ways to re-use your plastic waste

About Valuable Trash

Valuable Trash was created by Pranet, aged 14 from The Cathedral and John Connon School.

The app encourages you to take pictures of your plastic waste and then a machine learning model will guide you through creative ways to re-use it.

What is your product and who is it for?

My product is an Artificial Intelligence mobile application, that automatically identifies, classifies and suggests how to reuse the particular waste. It is for people who are concerned about the environment and want to reduce their carbon footprint creatively.

What inspired your idea, and why is it important to you?

I saw some alarming statistics on the amount of waste that we throw away daily. It inspired me to think about a solution to this problem. I like to reuse my waste creatively and build many products. With this application everyone can reuse their waste which does not occur easily to people otherwise.

How does your product solve the problem?

The user opens the app and gets a prompt to click an image. A machine learning algorithm classifies the waste based upon its type, material and size. The user gets an option to choose from multiple creative ideas based upon the detection of the algorithm. Once the user has selected an idea, he/she gets a step-by-step tutorial. My app allows users to easily recycle their waste which normally is very difficult for most. In this manner, it reduces the amount of waste generated by the user which would otherwise be extremely difficult for them and thus reducing their carbon footprint.

Why should your product win its category and why should people vote for you in the People’s Choice Award?

My product is my unique idea and is not an already available app. While there are many campaigns for reducing waste and climate action very few offer practical and simple solutions which can be done regularly. Most of the time it does not even occur to people that they can reuse their waste for another purpose.
